Tutorial 2 — Phrasing: When to Mix
Goal: start your transitions at the right moment — on a phrase
boundary — instead of at a random point. Beginners usually nail how to mix but mix at the wrong time,
so the two tracks' structures fight each other. GoDJ's Phrasing trainer makes song structure
visible and counts you down to the next good spot.
Turn it on in Settings → Training → Show Phrasing trainer (on by default).
What "phrasing" means
Dance music is built in blocks of 8, 16 and 32 bars — intro, verse, build, drop, break,
outro. A clean mix lines those blocks up: you bring the new track's intro in while the old
track is in a breakdown or outro, and you start the blend on a phrase line,
not mid-phrase.
Where to look
1. The scrolling waveform shows a coloured phrase band along the top of each
deck's lane (INTRO / VERSE / BUILD / DROP / BREAK / OUTRO), and the bar numbers count within the
current phrase (they reset to 1 at each new section).
2. The PHRASING row in the training strip shows, per deck:
A DROP 6 → BREAK B INTRO 8 → BUILD MIX IN 6 BARS
- The deck letter, its current section, a bar countdown to the next section,
and what's coming next.
- On the right, MIX IN N BARS counts down to the outgoing deck's next phrase
boundary. It's amber, and turns green when 4 bars or fewer remain — that green is your
"get ready" cue.
Step by step
- Get a track playing on one deck and cue the next track on the other.
- Pick the direction with A>B / A<B so it points into the incoming deck.
- Watch the MIX IN countdown and the outgoing deck's phrase band. A great place to bring the
new track in is when the outgoing track enters a BREAK or OUTRO.
- When MIX IN hits a small number and turns green, start your transition
(bring the fader/EQ in, or hit TRANSITION / T) so the blend begins on the boundary.
- Count in 8s as it plays — aim to have the new track's drop land where the old track has
stepped back.
Tips
- Mix out of energy, into energy. Bring the new track in during its quiet intro while the
old one breaks down; let the new drop take over.
- 8 / 16 / 32, not 7 or 13. Transitions feel right when they span whole phrases.
- Pair this with harmonic mixing — phrase-aligned and in key is a
pro-sounding blend.
Common mistakes
- Starting mid-phrase. The most common beginner error — wait for the boundary (green MIX IN).
- Ignoring the sections. Bringing a busy track in over another busy section = clutter. Use the
bands to find space.
