Tutorial 5 — Harmonic Mixing (Mix in Key)

Goal: blend tracks whose musical keys go together, so the mix sounds smooth and emotional instead of clashing. This is "harmonic mixing." Pro software shows you keys; GoDJ actually tells you whether the two you've got work together, and colours your track list so you can pick a good one.

Turn the coach on in Settings → Training → Show Harmonic-mixing coach (on by default).

The Camelot wheel (the quick version)

GoDJ analyses each track's key and shows it in Camelot notation: a number 1–12 plus a letterA = minor, B = major (e.g. 8A, 11B). The rules:

The HARMONY row

HARMONY A 8A Am B 9A Em Adjacent keys (one step) - smooth blend

It shows both decks' keys and a verdict, colour-coded green (compatible), amber (energy/diagonal — use care), or red (clash). It names the relationship so you learn the rules as you go.

Picking a compatible track from the list

While a track is playing, the library colours two columns for every other track, relative to the playing deck:

A row that's green BPM + green KEY is an ideal next track.

Step by step

  1. Get a track playing. Scan the list and pick a track whose Key cell is green (and ideally BPM green too).
  2. Load it to the other deck. Check the HARMONY row — it should read green.
  3. If it's amber, keep the blend short. If it's red, mix over a breakdown or pick another track.
  4. Combine with phrasing: in key and on the phrase = a polished mix.
