Tutorial 7 — Guided Lessons & Challenges
Goal: practise one skill at a time with a clear, pass/fail challenge that
watches you and tells you when you've nailed it. Open-ended practice is hard; a specific goal ("stay under 20 ms
for 30 seconds") is how you actually improve.
Open Settings → Lessons, pick a challenge, and press OK. A purple
LESSON banner appears at the top of the training strip and tracks your attempt live. Pick
None to stop. (Lessons need training mode enabled.)
The banner
LESSON Beatmatch by ear 12.4 s / 30 s (now 14 ms) [▓▓▓▓░░░░]
It shows the lesson, a live status, and (for timed goals) a progress bar. It's colour-coded: grey
(instructions), amber (in progress), green (passed), red
(missed — try again).
The lessons
1. Drop on the downbeat
Goal: start Deck B so it drops right on Deck A's downbeat (within 60 ms).
- Get Deck A playing. Cue Deck B.
- Hit play on Deck B exactly as Deck A crosses a bar line.
- The banner measures how close you were — "On the downbeat! (28 ms)" (pass) or
"Missed by 120 ms — try again." Restart Deck B to retry.
2. Beatmatch by ear
Goal: SYNC off, keep both decks within 20 ms of each other for 30 seconds straight.
- Turn SYNC off, play both decks, and match them by ear (Tutorial 1).
- The streak bar fills while you stay under 20 ms; drift over 20 ms resets it to zero, so you
have to hold the match.
- Pass at 30 seconds: "Passed! 30 s under 20 ms."
3. 16-bar bass swap
Goal: hand the bass from one deck to the other over ~16 bars, ideally starting on a phrase
boundary.
- Get Deck A's bass playing alone (cut Deck B's LOW).
- Start the swap: cut Deck A's LOW and bring Deck B's up.
- When Deck B's bass has fully taken over, you pass:
"Passed! Bass handed over in ~16 bars, on the phrase."
Tips
- Re-arm to retry. Re-selecting the lesson in Settings resets the attempt.
- Lessons stack the other coaches. Keep the relevant coach on (the drift needle for lesson 2,
the BASS row for lesson 3) to see exactly what's happening.
- Passing all three means you can drop, beatmatch and swap the bass — the core of a clean transition.
